History

The name of the tavern “Šumatovac” was first mentioned in 1906, and it got its name from the place Šumatovac near Aleksinac, where the Ottoman army suffered a great defeat. Over the years, the tavern changed many owners while the name remained the same, and the new tavern building was erected in 1923. .

The tavern “Šumatovac” was always located in Makedonska street number 33 in Belgrade, beside the “Politika” building. Throughout its one-hundred-year history it has been the seat of journalists, actors, writers, athletes, and bohemians. Together with taverns “Pod lipom” and “Grmeč,” it represented the so-called “Bermuda Triangle” of the Belgrade tavern bohemia of the second half of the 20 th century, and during the 1970s it was also an important meeting place for rockers.
